The voice of God

What is God’s voice, and how do we discern between our voice and that of God? Today I will share some personal insights on how I have learned to use discernment in hearing the voice of God.

I have had many people share their hearts with me about how it is difficult to hear God or even if they believe that God speaks to them through His Spirit and how this looks in their lives. I want to share “my experience” of hearing God’s voice and what that looks like for me in hopes that some of you may be blessed by my testimony in this!

What does God sound like?

I have often been asked, “What does God sound like”?

My answer is and always has been that when God speaks it will always be from His Character.

The character of God is found all throughout the Word of God, to see His character is to see the Father’s heart. We know that all that God does is good and out of love, for He is love.

Psalm 145:17 says the Lord is righteous in all His ways and gracious and merciful in all His works.

In 1 John 4:7-8 the word says Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

God’s character is the very essence of righteousness and goodness poured forth into every word He speaks.

When we honor the commandments of the Lord and trust in Him we can easily begin to know His character. God’s character is written in His Word; the Word of God is a complete fingerprint for the very character of who He is.

My son, do not forget my law, but let your heart keep my commands; for length of days and long life and peace they will add to you. Let not mercy and truth forsake you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart, and so find favor and high esteem in the sight of God and man. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.

Proverbs 3:1-6

To truly know the character of God you must be in your word daily and study the scriptures so that when you do hear from God you can confirm that character with that of His Word.

Once you begin to learn His character you can discern what it is you hear.

See God will never say or do anything that contradicts His Word. We need to remember that the world and everything in it was formed by the Word of God as stated in Hebrews 11:3.

So if you are hearing something from God that does not line up with His character in the Word, it is something to be in prayer about and testing of the spirits as stated in 1 John 4:1-6.

So to know if it is God’s voice or your voice, you need to simply be in your Word and ask the Father to reveal His word to you through the Holy Spirit.

God is eager to speak with you and He wants you to learn His voice and use your discernment wisely. God will never leave you confused when we walk in obedience to the Word of God.

God’s voice will always sound like His character and His character can always be found in the Holy Scriptures.

How to learn God’s voice

Here is a question I get asked a lot “Pamela, it is not that I don’t trust God doesn’t speak to me, I know He does because His word says so. But I don’t trust myself that I am hearing the right voice and always think it is just me and my good conscience. So I just don’t understand…”

If you believe that Jesus Christ of Nazareth is your Savior and that He has sent to you the Holy Spirit as your Helper, then you need to trust to rely on the Spirit of God within you to guide you and teach you the voice of God.

The Holy Spirit is our Helper to teach us all things and bring to our remembrance all the things Jesus said.

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom ethe Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remmbrance all things that I said to you.” John 14:26

-Jesus Christ of Nazareth

When we first start out to try and hear the voice of God, it may seem difficult at first because we have not had time to quiet our thoughts and mind to sit quietly long enough to listen to God’s voice.

In today’s world silence is not something many are used to or can only stand it for 20 minutes max! We must never rush God or His Spirit, but wait patiently for the Lord as the Word says!

The best advice that I can give someone just starting out in this area, is to meditate on God’s word as mentioned above, and then sit in the silence of prayer as you ask the Holy Spirit to guide you to hear the voice of God and direct you in discernment to hear accurately and with wisdom.

You can simply start out by saying a small prayer " Dear God, please allow your Holy Spirit to speak to me clearly so that my ears would be opened and I would be able to rightly discern and divide my thoughts from your voice. I have diligently sought out Your word and meditated on Your Character and Love of who You are. I am here to listen and receive your words, Father, speak to me, Your servant is listening."

When you ask the Father anything in Jesus’ name according to His will, it will be done for you. It is God’s will that you are able to speak with Him as a friend speaks face to face. As it was in the garden of Eden, so is it God’s heart to speak to you today still and call you friend.

the many ways to hear God

Now that you know to seek out God’s Character by His Word and are learning to trust the Holy Spirit as your Helper, I want to share the many ways God does speak to His children!

The great thing about knowing how God speaks to us is that we have a historical document of all the ways He speaks to us, the Bible shows us vast ways of how God.

History of God speaking

  • His Word (Bible): 2 Timothy 3:16 & Hebrews 4:12
  • Prophets/ Wise Counsel: Hebrews 1:1-3
  • Inner-Most-Human-Spirit: Jeremiah 22:12-13
  • Dreams: Joel 2:28
  • Within the Church/Temple Building: Isaiah 6:1-7
  • Audible Sound: 1 Samuel 3:8-9
  • Gentle Whisper: 1 Kingdom 19:11-13
  • His Creation: Romans 1:20
  • Nature: Exodus 3:1-4
  • Bright Light: Acts 9:1-5
  • Fleece (Asking): Judges 6:37-40
  • Heavens/Weather: John 12:27-30
  • Animals: Numbers 22:1-35
  • Circumstances: Jonah 1-4
  • Peace: Colossians 3:15

These are just a tiny handful of scripture to show how God speaks. The Bible is filled with the voice of God and created by the voice of God.

today god speaks

I find that God speaks to me daily when I am in prayer, worship, journaling, reading my word, singing, meditating, or in silent peace of thought with Him. He also speaks to me in dreams, visions, and encounters with His presence or His angels.

To hear His voice is a peace that is not fabricated from experience or surroundings. It is the gentle whisper within the storm of life. His voice is HOME to me, it’s where I belong!

I find myself talking to God all day long and even while writing this blog, I have asked Him many times to remind me of a scripture or how to word something I am meaning to say. Once I ask, I know without a shadow of a doubt in my heart that I will receive an answer.

When I hear God respond to me it can be done in many ways, such as that still small gentle whisper or in what some would call a sudden idea/thought! But what I want you to take from this is that when you ask God something, be sure you know you will get a response. It is not “your” idea or thoughts that are the resolution to your problem or issue that brings resolution to peace, it is God’s response to your request.

Too many people put God in their religious boxes and say that God can only speak a certain way or that God can only do something a way they are comfortable with. This is very sad because those people will never truly experience the glory and presence of God because they doubt and lack faith. Suppose they will receive anything from the Lord, and that includes the beautiful conversations with God that He so desires for all His children.

The next time you are in the middle of something or worshipping God, begin to talk to Him as you would a friend. Ask Him questions, say good morning to Him, and sing to Him a new song in your heart every day! He is always there listening and eager for you to learn to hear His voice because He is always speaking!
