Blessing in Humility

Some of the prayers you’re seeking answers for may come from your own humility.

We know that God works through the body of Christ and through each obedient and humble child of His. Through this obedience, a blessing can be passed on to others within the body. These blessings may come in various forms—spiritual, physical, or even material needs. Although God is the source of all provision, He sometimes uses His people to meet those needs.

There are moments when we must humble ourselves in certain areas of our lives to receive what we’ve been praying for, though this is not always the case for every prayer.

Psalm 66:18 reminds us that if we hold onto iniquity in our hearts, the Lord will not hear us. Likewise, 1 Peter 3:1-7 teaches that prayers can be hindered if husbands and wives are not obedient to God’s Word. Many focus only on verse 7, but to fully understand how to prevent hindrances to our prayers, we must start at verse 1. The passage ends with the consequence: if these things in marriage are not honored, our prayers will be hindered.

James 4:3 also speaks of asking and not receiving because we ask with wrong motives, seeking to satisfy our own desires rather than the will of God. These three passages reveal that prayer can be hindered when we lack humility and obedience.

If we humble ourselves before the Lord and do not harbor sin, God promises to lift us up (James 4:10). Humbling ourselves in our marriages would mean honoring our spouses in a way that pleases God, avoiding disobedience and the hindrance of our prayers.

Similarly, humbling ourselves to God’s will in all aspects of life aligns our desires with His, leading to prayers that reflect His will, not our own.

There is great humility that accompanies the blessings of the Lord, for Christ Himself humbled Himself, even to death, for our sake. His entire story is rooted in love and humility—He is the perfect example of both.

Are there areas in your life where you are not humbling yourself? Are there places in your heart where you’ve resisted God’s call to humility?

Reflecting on why things may be going wrong or why there’s a lack of growth isn’t always the right approach. Instead, ask the Lord to reveal anything within you that may be hindering your prayers. It could be your thought patterns, something in your faith, or perhaps something in your marriage that needs prayer so that God can move and remove the hindrance.

There may be many things not mentioned here, but asking the Lord to show you where there may be hindrances—whether in your prayer life or your obedience—is a good starting point. God seeks those who will worship Him in spirit and in truth.

When we ask Him to reveal even the difficult truths in our hearts, it honors Him, and He responds with the grace to set us free.
