5 Steps to stopping roller coaster emotions

Do your emotions tend to get out of hand more than you would like them to? Have you concealed your rush of emotions so that no one can see them, but on the inside, you feel you are going to burst? If you can answer yes to either of these, then I may have some steps that will help you overcome the emotional roller coaster emotions in your life!

You are not alone~

We all have areas in our life where we struggle badly with our emotions, sometimes allowing our emotions to get the best of us in every situation we face, leaving us to regret how we overreacted to a situation or a problem. 

As children of God we are called to live a life of peace and anything opposite of this causes an unstable atmosphere around us and those we love, I call these unstable emotions.  Unstable means: prone to change, fail or give way- now let me quickly break that down in the spiritual warfare way!

To be emotionally unstable is to allow yourself to be changed with each and every little thing that is happening around you, causing you to momentarily fail in your walk as a warrior of God.

What if I told you that there is freedom from having these unstable emotions, and from allowing your emotions to take dominance over your life? 

There is so much that can be said about the next 5 steps, but to save you time let’s just begin shall we!

1. Recognition

Your first step is to recognize what attitude is; you must know that when you begin to allow an attitude into your life, you have just allowed the character and thoughts of your enemy into your life. (that is anything and everything that opposes God: Satan, Demons & even your flesh)

The enemy feeds on our minds, the enemy is constantly in a form of rage and anger at all times. The enemy wants to infest this type of emotion into your mind and get you to start thinking the same way they think so that you also feel the same way they feel.

The enemy wants to get you to distance yourself from the character of God that is living inside of you (the Holy Spirit) because the enemy/flesh hates God and is constantly at enmity against each other. Romans 8:7-9

Don’t get it twisted and think that the enemy is after you; sorry but we are not that important to them!  The enemy is after God within us, the enemy knows that if they can get God’s children to start acting like they come from the seed of the Father of lies (John 8:44), then this would go against what God’s desire was intended for His children.

All in an attempt to offend and disrespect God; that is the enemy’s goal and they use us as pawns to do this we need to recognize this and remember whose seed we are from and not allow the thoughts of the enemy to become who we are.

Galatians 3:29 and if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

“The enemy is after God within you, not you”

 

2. Making the Choice

Once we are aware of the fact that these emotions do not belong to us but belong to the enemy and are the characteristics of the enemy then this is when we now make the choice as to which or (whose) character we are going to choose to walk in.

We can choose to walk in the characteristics of the Lord thus changing our mindset instantly to the way we know the Lord would act in this situation because we have seen examples in the word of God of every horrible situation imaginable and yet seen how our Savior had reacted to them all.

Or we can continue to allow the enemies’ characteristics to flood our emotions making us feel justified to have the right to these emotions.  This type of characteristic thinking (lies of the enemy) leads to the accusing spirit of lies that now comes in and begins accusing those around us or situations that we believe are the cause of us feeling this way.

We must make a choice and when doing so; remember the characteristic that we were born into through the blood of Jesus Christ; these characteristics are of God and are our gift from God so that we no longer have to walk in the characteristics of these hateful, envious, and unstable emotions that try to rule our lives.

Making this choice can be as easy as saying a simple prayer in faith “Jesus, help me. I know that God is not a God of disorder but of order as Your word says in 1 Corinthians 4:13. Please help me get my emotions and life in order, I cannot do this anymore Lord.”

3. Receiving Intel of your enemy

The moment you recognize that the atmosphere in your mind and heart has shifted or even tilted just a little, the first step is to ask God why and what is causing this.

Generally to be honest; it will always be something that we are trying to take control of that we should not have been trying to control in the first place but instead allowing God to handle it or something that made us feel hurt and taken advantage of by our friends, spouse or coworkers.

These emotional lies will always come in very subtlety and be very familiar to you as a person. This is how the enemy is able to get you to accept them as your own because they mimic your basic repeated responses to their attacks over the years you have been alive. The enemy is always seeking who he may devour, but we are given the Holy Spirit as our Helper and we can ask Him these simple questions to help us out along this journey.

What happened to make me feel this way?

Where did I go wrong in allowing the enemy’s thoughts to become my own?

How can I guard my heart and mind better next time to prevent this from happening?

Something very important in our Spiritual Warfare that many forget; is that we have the Helper living inside of us as our direct connection to the throne room of God.  To often He is forgotten or only asked to partake in our lives when we desire to have an emotional worship experience or speak in our heavenly language (speaking in tongues).

The Holy Spirit desires to be a part of every aspect of your life, just as God and Jesus Christ desire the same thing for they are 3 in 1 and desire you!

1 John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

It is time that we all started looking at the Holy Spirit exactly as the scriptures tell us, that He is our Helper and Comforter for He knows all things in God and of God, and who better to help us in warfare and comfort us when the lies have torn us down so hard that we have hurt those around us by our unstable emotional outbursts than the comforter Himself!

John 14:26  But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you

 

4. Declare War

Now that we have recognized the cause for our unstable emotional mindset, made the choice to no longer be ruled by them, and allow and ask the Holy Spirit to guide and help set us free it is time to go to war and take back our peace in our lives and minds.

When in Spiritual Warfare try to get yourself to think of all the lies the enemy tells you as his ammunition, the enemy uses their ammunition (words/lies) against you breaking every part of your self-esteem and everything you stand for down by their words of lies, and let’s not forget how they use their ammunition aimed directly at marriages, relationships, and the body of Christ with a lying spirit of division.  Our ammunition is also words except for the amazing thing about our words is… they are TRUTH and they are ALIVE and sharper than any two-edged sword.

Hebrews 4:12 for the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Whatever the lie is that the enemy is whispering in your ear even if it is let’s say an accusing spirit, combat the lying accusing spirit with the scriptures that remind YOU that you are no longer condemned but that you are set free by the blood of Jesus Christ, flip the script on them and remind them by what power and authority has been given to you by Jesus Christ and tell them of their own condemnation they will receive.

I assure you that the enemy despises to be reminded that they have lost the battle, that they no longer have power or dominion over this earth, and that all power and dominion over everything in this earth has been given over to Jesus Christ and through His blood we too have received that wonderful inheritance from God, therefore placing us as having power and dominion over every demonic force and principality on earth and in the air.

Ephesians 1:20-23 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.  And He put all things under His feet and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

5. Build your Fortress

Building our fortress enables us to become a child of God that is not susceptible to outside influence or disturbance of the enemy anymore and I will assure you that this is going to take some work on our end, it will not be easy unless the first 4 steps above are practiced daily and often throughout the day.

When we do this we are building a fortress that is heavily protected by the blood of Jesus Christ and our Inheritance through Christ, and that is impenetrable by any weapon or deception of the enemy in our lives.   In able to build a fortress that can withstand the attacks of such a spiritual battle, we must start by building a very strong foundation.

Matthew 7:24-27 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock and every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

Our foundation first starts with hearing the word of the Lord and then doing what the word of God is telling us.  The foundation of a man is very important because we can read the word all day long till our eyes are sore, but to apply it to our lives is a completely different thing.

But when we begin to practice DAILY taking recognition of our own emotions at the moment they are happening within us and notice the shift or tilt in our Kingdom-minded atmosphere from being in a state of peace to now being in a state of panic, anger, and malice then we need to take captive every thought to the obedience of Jesus Christ and recognize whose child we are in that moment by how our atmosphere begins to feel.

Because you are a child of God, your atmosphere should always be at peace no matter the storm around you because the Spirit of God is peaceful and living within you, but if you are not feeling this way then perhaps we need to take our thoughts captive immediately and recognize that there may be an enemy in the camp (mind!)

2 Corinthians 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ

When we begin taking action in these areas we start to take back our inherited position over the enemy one lie at a time!  And in taking back our inheritance we start to find out who we are in Christ and our foundation becomes very sturdy,

For a daughter of God who knows that her true self is founded in Christ, has no reason to be tossed to and fro because she hides in the fortress of her God. –  Pamela Allaart

I myself have to practice these 5 steps in my life every single day my feet hit the floor and I will not ever stop for as long as my enemy is still roaming the earth seeking whom he may devour, I will do my best to succeed in my emotions and not give way to the enemy but be stable minded and yes some days I am a complete failure in this, I will be honest but that will never stop me giving up!  When doing all of these 5 powerful steps we are building a fortress starting with the foundation so that we can become unshakable, unmovable, and grounded!  Standing firm in Jesus Christ and not being tossed to and fro in our emotions every day and so I encourage you as I must encourage myself as well,  that we stand strong on these foundation building blocks and apply them in our lives so that when the storms come and the winds blow that we are not moved and that we do not fall into a great fall.
